Verb “tener”

 

Meaning: to be/have – depending on the context used.

 

It is used when we to talk about:

1 *age, i.e. Yo tengo 30 años (I am 30 years old)

2 *our possessions, i.e. Yo tengo una casa en la playa (I have got a beach  house)

3 *our physical characteristics, i.e. Yo tengo unos ojos soñadores (I have dreaming eyes – see ‘Se dice de mi’ song)

4 *family, i.e. Yo tengo dos hermanas en Argentina (I have two sisiters in Argentina)

 Tener is an irregular verb which means it doesn’t follow a pattern when conjugated; it has its own pattern. This is the cojugation for “tener” in the present tense (Presente)

él, ella, Ud./ eso  tienen                     he/she/you formal/ that is

nosotros tenemos                                  we are

vosotros tenéis                                       you are

ellos, ellas, Uds. tienen                     they – men & women – you formal plural are
